Homemade Skyline Chili Recipe (for slow-cooker)

If your Sundays in Fall consist of Football and Crock Pot smelling up your house, then you have to try this out. Especially if you're from Cincinnati (or like Cincinnati-style chili)

This recipe is SO good, and really does taste like the real deal, though this one is made with real ingredients that aren't going to make you feel terrible after eating.

And for those of you who don't know and may not be from this area, Cincinnati-style chili is always on a bed of noodles, and your "-Way" depends on what you put on it!

3-Way = noodles, chili, cheese

4-Way = a 3-Way with onions OR beans

5-Way = a 3-Way with onions AND beans

To make this even more of a Clean recipe, make sure your noodles are whole-wheat (or whole-grain, basically anything but white) and fresh cheddar cheese. Grate the cheese yourself to get a cheese texture similar to Skyline's. Top with some HFCS-free oyster crackers and you've got one heck of a delicious meal!

If you want to make this during the week, just be sure to brown the meat beforehand so you can throw everything together in the morning.

Slow Cooker "Skyline" Chili

adapted from stacymakesscents.com

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 pounds ground meat (we used my dad's deer meat and it was so good!)

  • 1 large onion, minced

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 cup (8 ounces) tomato sauce (the jar I used was only 7.5 oz and it worked)

  • 2 cups water

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tablespoon vinegar

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • 4+ teaspoons chili powder (based on taste, we used 6 tsp)

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • ½ teaspoon allspice

  • 1 ½ cups cooked kidney beans (optional - I omitted this since the hubby doesn't like beans)

  • Cheese

  • Whole-wheat or whole-grain Noodles

DIRECTIONS:

  1. In a skillet, brown the ground meat.

  2. Pour into 5 quart crock.

  3. Stir in onion, garlic powder, tomato sauce, water, Worcestershire, vinegar, salt, pepper, chili powder, cinnamon, and allspice.

  4. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours.

  5. 1 hour before done, add kidney beans (if using)

  6. Boil desired pasta.

  7. Layer noodles in bowl, add chili, and top with cheese.

Yield : 8 servings
