Homemade Ketchup

The night I learned about High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), I literally threw EVERYTHING away in my kitchen that contained it. Ketchup was among those foresaken items. And although you can buy organic (and some not organic) ketchup without it, they usually contain added sugar of some sort, which I am mindful of staying away from, if possible.

To be honest, I was not interested in making my own ketchup. Even though we try to be as non-processed and eat as many whole foods as possible, convenience is still a big factor for me, and with how little we actually use ketchup (Chad doesn't even touch it, along with just about every other condiment), I figured it was OK every now and then. However, when I came across a super simple recipe - that included Apple Cider Vinegar - I just HAD to try it!

Through my training at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN), I've learned about many different natural remedies and preventive foods, and Apple Cider Vinegar is amongst those! I've always wanted to learn to incorporate it more, as it's known to help those with high blood pressure (ahem, my hubby), amongst many other amazing benefits. Even though Chad won't touch my homemade ketchup, I still like knowing it actually has benefits to mine & Elle's health! I look forward to the day where I get a chance to make this using fresh tomatoes!

Ingredients

  • 7 oz. tomato paste (I finally found them in glass jars at Whole Foods, as I like to stay away from anything canned) Also, make sure the ONLY ingredient is tomatoes. Organic preferred!

  • 1/2 cup water

  • 2 tbsp raw Apple Cider Vinegar

  • 2 tbsp raw honey

  • 1/2 tsp sea salt

  • 1/4 tsp onion granules

  • 1/8 tsp allspice

  • 1/8 tsp ground cloves

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients BUT the water and whisk until combined.

  • Slowly add water to desired consistancy

  • It is best to let the ketchup sit together in the fridge for a couple of hours, or overnight, before serving so that the flavors blend together well.

  • Store in an airtight container in fridge. I put mine in a mason jar.

Notes - Get in the habit of checking ingredients!!

Check the ingredients of your tomato paste. The only item listed should be tomatoes.
